The Hawaiian Monk seal is endangered from disturbing human activities for their meat, oil and skin, dominating number of males than females, starvation, and predation of tiger sharks and Galapagos sharks. They are also often caught in fishing nets and debris and die. Many protection efforts have been put in place, their numbers have declined significantly and have fallen more than ten percent per year since 1989. Biologist believe that in the next 3 to 4 years the population will dip below 1,000. The current population of the seals is 1,110 fighting for existence.
