The Vaquita is the world's smallest, most endangered, and rare marine mammal. This species is on the edge of extinction. The Vaquita was a species discovered in 1958 and we are already losing them forever. Vaquita are often captured and drowned in gillnets that are used by illegal fishing operations in marine protected areas within Mexico's Gulf of California.
Extensive gill-netting for fishing has threatened these species greatly. This marine species has experienced a slow drop in population since 1940s. Even though the gill-netting process ceased to exist in 1970, the population fall persists as much as 15% a year. An estimated 500-600 still exist and are fighting to survive. More than half of their population has been lost in three years.
